I have always loved working with celluloid photography and my hands. These two come together for me when creating my films. I continue to work with 16mm film (for as long as I possibly can) which I usually hand process in a bucket. Using techniques such as camera-‐less direct animation, matte-‐making and cut out animation I strive to create works that embody the aspects of cinema I love, sculpture, humor and grace.
Born in Albuquerque, NM, Ben Popp began making animations and short films with his parents VHS camera before decidedly moving on to working with 16mm film later in life in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After receiving his MFA in Film, Video and New Media from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007, Ben moved to Portland (where else) to become part of the film community. In 2010, Ben helped co-found the micro-cinema Grand Detour which has been a hub for experimental media makers both near and far, hosting both individual, group and traveling shows around Portland. In May of 2012, with Grand Detour co-founder Hannah Piper Burns, EFF Portland (Experimental Film Festival Portland) was launched, featuring over 110 films, installations and performances throughout the city. Throughout all of this, Ben has been making award winning animations and films that have been screened in festivals and shows around the globe. Most recently he was awarded the 2013 Oregon Media Arts Fellowship Grant given by the Oregon Arts Council. In addition, Ben is an educator working with both youth and adults, teaching animation and video making practices with various organizations around Portland.
