Curb Appeal Vol. 3: Portland Neighborhood Spotlight – Laurelhurst

By Aryne + Dulcinea, May 16, 2018

THE HISTORY:

Portland’s Laurelhurst neighborhood was founded in 1909, but its legacy began in 1850, with Congress’ passage of the Donation Land Claim. This statute provided powerful incentive to migrate to the region, entitling eligible parties to up 640 acres of land. The legislation was one of the most substantial public land sale policies in American history, with over 7,400 patents issued. Modern day Laurelhurst was comprised of two of these plots, which were later purchased by politician and businessman, William S. Ladd. Following his death, the Laurelhurst Company bought the property, with the exception of the 31 acres which would become Laurelhurst Park.

THE MARKET:

Today, Laurelhurst retains its historic charm, serving as a staple in Portland’s residential composition. The area features an eclectic collection of architectural styles and meticulous gardens reminiscent of its namesake, Seattle’s Laurelhurst neighborhood. Over 4,600 Portlanders reside in the area. With 82% of these residents owning their homes, Laurelhurst maintains one the highest percentages of home ownership city-wide. Portland Monthly projects homes in this area will average $654,275 and last only 26 days on the market.

WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT LAURELHURST:

Its central location, expansive properties and deep-rooted sense of community make the Laurelhurst neighborhood one of Portland’s most desirable markets. Each home boasts its own sense of style, featuring vintage Tudors, stately mansions, and historic bungalows. The undulating streets are lined with heritage trees, creating a residential space as an intimate as it is impressive. Earning a Walk Score of 79, Laurelhurst provides easy access to 134 restaurants, bars and cafes.
