Blog ADU A Future Unfolds

A Future Unfolds

By Daniela Sardo, December 24, 2019

In modern usage, the word “origami” is used as an inclusive term for all folding practices, regardless of their culture of origin. The goal is to transform a flat square sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. Wikipedia.

I first got to see the Portland Origami homes on a field trip for an Earth Advantage and accessory dwelling unit (ADU) certification class. I fell for them right away.  The blue pleated row houses on N. Vancouver were so darned cool and environmentally conscious in their execution.  I couldn’t easily forget them.  Anytime someone asked me about a town home with an ADU, I would suggest the Origami project.  Two of the town homes have an attached ADU but all are very distinctive.  The unfolding lends itself to a wonderful play of light and shadows in each home differently.  I went there twice with other buyers.  Unfortunately neither of them were interested.  I promised the listing agents that I would sell one some day.

Enter Nick and Claire!

Since they wanted to be near it all while still being conscious of their footprint and their total cost, I took them to look at new construction.  We toured a few homes around town with no success.  We looked inner city, inner urban, and inner outer NE.  Then, I was struck with a thought and I knew what to do!  One of the units at Origami called Plane, with two floors of livable space and a self-contained unit on the ground floor that they can rent, use as a home office or as additional living space was perfect for them!  By the time we came around, one of the two Plane units was already taken so we had to move fast. Within only 30 days Nick and Claire are the proud owners of a new Origami home.

I popped by not long after closing to say hello.  They told me they had already successfully launched the apartment unit into the Airbnb world, ostensibly paying a chunk of their mortgage.  Not only do they save on monthly mortgage cost but the home itself, being an Earth Advantage Home, saves them money every month on their utility bills.  This kind of smart thinking lets Nick and Claire be house happy without being in the poor house.

Congratulations you two! Thanks for letting me be part of the team and taking that one step closer to a sustainable future.
