Sarah Bellum Cupcakes in Multnomah Village

By Sharon Marciniak (Bloudek), June 12, 2019

Cupcakes, the most mobile of cakes always seem to meet many diverse sweet needs. But now they are changing lives!

Cupcakes at the non-profit Sarah Bellum’s Bakery & Workshop are made by people who have suffered brain injuries as adults, who work alongside speech and occupational students from Pacific University. An outstanding social enterprise idea!

Originally the brainchild of Rik Lemoncello (Pacific University Associate Professor of Speech Language Pathology), Faith and “Had” Walmer (a brain injury survivor) also came on board to create a unique rehabilitation space. The bakery allows skills and experience to grow within a supportive environment that can help people with brain injuries a return to the job market. But most importunately, it also creates a friendly space for interacting with the public, easing survivors back into social interaction, while also increasing awareness of brain injuries within the community.

Who is Sarah Bellum? The name is a play on words, and refers to the cerebellum of the brain, which controls coordination, language, motor and cognitive skills. They sell all-organic cupcakes, with gluten free and vegan options, and even a line of dog treats.

The shop is located at 7828 SW Capitol Hwy, just around the corner from my office, so anytime you want to check out Multonomah Village, call me at (503) 701-1000. We can meet for a real estate chat with a sweet treat at this bakery that benefits so many in our neighborhood.
