Why You Should Check the Appliances During the Home Inspection!

Did you know that home inspections may not include a full inspection of your appliances? Why is this important?

This past summer my client called me just after closing and moving into his new home. He was alarmed. He noticed that the clothes dryer had a problem that hadn’t been noticed beforehand. The knob on the dryer was from an oven! Not only that, but it didn’t work properly. The plastic was damaged on the dial and it wouldn’t turn properly. The knob was just a placeholder. In order to turn the dryer on, he had to use a wrench!

Clearly this was a frustrating discovery. In reviewing the photos from the home inspection, they indeed showed the oven knob on the dryer. While this all may seem funny, it wasn’t at the time, because my client was left with a damaged dryer and we had no recourse.

Next time you’re at a home inspection, make sure to check out the appliances and look closely! You may also inquire with the inspector whether they plan to test the appliances, as this isn’t always part of the home inspection. You may end up inadvertently “broiling” your clothes!
