THE LOSS OF URSULA K. LE GUIN

By Julie Davis, February 2, 2018

Last month Portland lost one of our own. Ursula K. Le Guin, our local legendary and prolific science fiction writer passed away at the age of 88.

The New York Times called her “the immensely popular author who brought literary depth and a tough-minded feminist sensibility to science fiction and fantasy with books like The Left Hand of Darkness and the Earthsea series.” Her influences ranged from J.R.R. Tolkien to Tolstoy, and Virginia Woolf. She created worlds that dove deep into issues of race and gender, and examined how structures of human culture and society impacted her characters on an individual level. Le Guin has inspired generations of young readers and writers. She was active in the Portland literary scene and recently contributed an opinion piece to The Oregonian on “alternative facts.”

Her legacy is enormous, both as a fantasy writer, and a female writer of her generation. Ursula, you will be missed!
