A day in Kenton

By Eldridge Huntington, June 25, 2018

There has been a lot of talk about Kenton, and for very good reason. Not only has it been a hot spot in Real Estate for the past few years, but it’s got a great main street that really makes it feel like it’s own little world. If you don’t live in the neighborhood, I highly recommend making a day of it and heading out for a fun-filled day in NoPo.

First up, grab a hot beverage and tasty breakfast at Posies Cafe. They have a dynamite breakfast sandwich and it’s a great place to slowly and leisurely ease into the day. Next, check out the shop next door, Mantle. It’s got a beautifully curated collection of home goods, jewelry, and other accoutrement. get yourself a little prize. Treat yo self. You deserve it.

Next up, pop into Speck’s Records and thumb through an impressive collection of vinyl and chat with the staff there about what upcoming shows they are hosting. It’s a really quirky space and they regularly host small shows for local bands, and the variety is really all over the place.

For lunch, head into Po’Shines Cafe de la Soul and get your barbecue fix. It’s got a great history and is one of the most community-minded restaurants in town. Note: They aren’t open on Sunday’s, since the whole staff is next door at the Tabernacle Church.

Take a little walk to stretch your legs after all that delicious food. Head over to Kenton Park to watch the dogs play and lay in the sun for a bit. Get that vitamin D.

If you need an afternoon pickup, head over to Presso Coffee Bar for a tasty latte or kombucha on tap. It’s a really beautiful space and is family-run by the sweetest folks. Also it’s very instagram-friendly, so snap some pics and share about your great day in Kenton!

Dinner time: Head up to Swift & Union. Everything is delicious.

Now for a little evening entertainment. Disjecta is a great gallery and performance space that regularly hosts shows by local and traveling artists as well as a variety of storytelling events, dance performances, and the occasional burlesque show. Check out their schedule to find something to pique your interest. If a show isn’t your speed, head over to The World Famous Kenton Club. It’s the best dive bar and they don’t really care whether or not you like them. They keep a good beer list and there is often live music by local bands, but the real treat is just kickin’ with some friends and snacks on the back patio, getting a little buzzed and reminiscing on how great Kenton is.

My name is Eldridge D Huntington III: a name I’m very proud to have even if it doesn’t exactly fit my personality. My family and friends call me JR. It’s a long story, but the short answer to the short name is Dallas. I was born in Fargo, raised in Detroit, lived in Chicago for 11 years, and now I’m truly home in Portland. Real estate was not my first career. I studied film at Columbia College. Although I was more interested in cinematography I found I was better suited as a Producer. Assembling and managing crews, scheduling, accounting and being a part of a project from the idea to the time it hits the screen was extremely fulfilling. After 7 years of producing I began working in the art department creating, designing and bringing sets to life.  I worked on Major motion pictures like Nightmare on Elm street, Public Enemies, Time travelers wife, Wild, Grimm and Librarians. With a background in design and long history of managing multiple high level projects I have found a perfect balance as a Realtor. I love multi-tasking, working with a team to pull off amazing feats and using an analytical approach creatively. I moved to Portland in 2009 with my wife Gina. We currently live in the Portsmouth neighborhood with our two daughters, Estelle and Etta. We purchased our first family home in 2011. We found a little yellow bungalow with a cedar fence and fell deeply in love with it at first sight. We attempt to be gardeners in the summer and rehab addicts during the winter. Most of my spare time is well spent making memories with these wonderful people and working on the house. My favorite things about Portland are the access to natural beauty, outstanding food, the kind and adventurous people and the beer.
