Neighborhood Spotlight: Hawthorne

By Living Room Realty, May 23, 2019

Hawthorne isn’t a true neighborhood in the technical sense, but everyone knows it by that name. Hawthorne Boulevard defines the boundary between Sunnyside and Richmond neighborhoods, but with all of the hustle and bustle of this 4-lane commercial corridor, it’s no wonder the area is lovingly referred to by the name of the street. From one end bookmarking it at the historical Hawthorne bridge (the oldest still functioning vertical lift bridge in the country) and the other end at the glorious Mt Tabor Park, there seems to be no end to the wonderful delights that await any traveler, new arrival, or long-time resident.

I’ve lived within a few blocks of Hawthorne since 2000. Since I now run my backyard ADU as a full-fledged Airbnb, every day I get to share what I know about the awesome spots that are all in close proximity. From boutique shopping to kids’ shoes and toys, to unique Portland gift stores, Powells and more, there is something for absolutely everyone here. We are lucky to have been saved from chain stores, and while you may have some trouble finding a parking spot, the trade off of total walkability, charm, locally owned stores and products, it’s well worth the mandate to get out of your car.

At the heart of the neighborhood is the Bagdad theater, now showing first-run movies with an updated sound system and new seats. This is one of many spots Portlanders like to come, watch movies, and have their share of beer, too. Don’t miss the tiny bar behind it, Greater Trumps, as you await your show.

Did you know Hawthorne has a very cool performing arts theater, Echo Theater? This place has aerial arts for the young and not-so-young, and puts on quite an act.

So, so many quick eats to be found here: my favorites in this category are Fried Egg I’m in Love for breakfast, Whole Bowl for lunch, and Tight Tacos food truck for dinner.

Longer form super good meals can be found at Harlow, Jam, Apizza Scholls, and Por Que No? Don’t forget Mio Sushi and Sea Sweets Poke for Asian inspired meals. Tabor Bread, Grand Central for delicious baked items, and Sapphire Lounge and Thirsty Monk for fun drinking venues.

If fancy is what you want, then give Castagna or Three Doors Down a whirl.

Give me a shout if Hawthorne is a potential to be your future home base. I love sharing this place with people who appreciate what a unique and awesome place this is to call home, even if you’re just visiting!
