REALTOR® Mom, Designer Mom

By Living Room Realty, May 24, 2019

I recently helped my son and his wife purchase their first home. The journey to find the perfect property was quite a personal challenge. I found myself being REALTOR® Mom. I was more protective on which houses we viewed and how they invested their money. As realtors, some of our most challenging transactions are those involving family. Our emotions get tied into how we advise, consul and approach a transaction.

We began looking last year, wrote many offers, negotiated on a few but nothing seemed to come together. We found ourselves making too many compromises and feeling desperate to just find something. As so happens, a few days after we made the decision to put the search on hold, a cute-as-a-button incredibly located and thoughtfully maintained tiny bungalow caught our attention.

The house ticks all the boxes except one. Size. With only 1 bedroom, it unfortunately does not offer the space they were hoping for in an office/guest/game room. Enter Designer Mom. I own a design company , and I excell at creative problem solving in small spaces. I often design and consult on creative storage solution in ADU’s.

A good place to recapture underutilized space is in the sunroom. Ideas abound – Lofted storage over the stairs, a bookshelf on the far wall under the windows, so much potential. With the lower sloped ceiling there are some challenges but headed in this direction, I am certain we will creatively collaborate on a solution! I am happy to be letting go of the pressures of being REALTOR® Mom. I am enjoying settling in to the relaxed creative brain of Designer Mom and to help my children create a space they love.

Here is a built in we designed for a client – it features a twin bed mattress for napping, drawers for linens underneath,  hanging clothes storage, and plenty of bookshelves for a growing collection!
