Shop Talk Vol.5: Tidying Up – The Most Underrated Form of Self-Care

By The Dream Digs Team, August 20, 2018

There’s been a lot of commotion around developing habits of tidiness. The proclaimed Queen of Tidying Up, Marie Kondo, has even dubbed the practice as “life-changing magic.” It’s a bold claim, of course. But when we take a moment to evaluate the impact of tidy living, we find there are several improvements which result from creating a well-maintained space. With benefits including peace of mind and increased opportunities for socialization, tidying up may be the most underrated form of self-care.

Environmental Impacts

Medical researchers and mental health professionals have long understood the impact of your personal environment on your mental well-being. Your environment can serve as both a reflection and perpetuator of your current habits. An organized space can help relieve environmental stress, resulting in improvements to your mood and productivity. Additionally, creating a system which fosters organization can help you develop micro habits of tidiness, allowing you to maintain a more livable space.

Social Impacts

Have you ever invited over a last-minute guest, only to realize your space is an inhospitable mess? Utilizing habits of tidiness will – at the very least – minimize the mess in your home and create an environment more welcoming to friends, neighbors and family members. Studies have even found that individuals who maintain a clean home are more likely to host social events.

How to Master Tidy Living

  1. Start with a clean slate. The best way to have a tidy space is to start  with a tidy space. Audit your home and determine what needs need to be addressed. Is it clutter? Spend a weekend doing a purge of your closets and storage spaces to free up space. Is it cleanliness? Hire a crew of cleaners to do a deep-clean of your space. Giving yourself this head start will help in making the transition into your new habits.

  1. Clean as you go. A tidiness pro knows that a couple of minutes a day is much preferred to the weekend sweep. Once your space is in a manageable, it’ll be much easier to identify items out of place or areas in need of attention. Get in the habit of putting your clothes away each day and wiping down the heavily used surfaces in your primary living space.

  1. Make it a date. So you let a few days slip, and you need to get back on track. GREAT! This is the perfect reason to set aside an evening for yourself. Open a bottle of wine, play your favorite album or podcast and get to it. We recommend setting aside at least twice the amount of time you anticipate spending. That way, you don’t have to rush through your projects, and you can use the remaining time to do reward your hard work with something especially luxurious.

It might be the most underrated form of self-care, but tidy living has huge payoffs for your mental and emotional well-being. It’s too easy to get caught up in the daily grind and relegate your needs for these external demands. But when we stop taking care of our homes, we stop taking care of ourselves. A tidy home is one that you can truly fall in love with, and don’t you deserve to love where you live?
