The Mars Dilemma

By Steve Brian, July 26, 2019

Our rocky, red neighbor named for the Roman god of war. That fiery little presence on our celestial shoulder. A remnant of an older era where war and combat were venerated — at least more overtly — and given their own gods in all the great pantheons.

We look upon that practice now as barbaric and out-dated. A relic of the Age of Antiquity we’ve risen above through our Ages of Reason and Revolution.

But have we really? And is war such a bad thing?

Good. Bad. Doesn’t it just depend on which side of history you fall?

What is our own history but a cycle of conflict against whatever agreed-upon enemy? If not aggression, then certainly self-defense.

Aggression. Defense. The two sides of the coin of perpetuating self-interest.

And again, is that such a bad thing?

With training we learn to not only attack but to defend. On a personal scale and on a planetary one. The shield paired with the sword.

So maybe we all do carry a little war around inside of us. We venerate and christen our planetary neighbor to remind us of that. To be cognizant of that facet of our natures and to rise above our innate aggression and seek to protect ourselves with skill, precision, and will.

We study martial arts as a means to do so. The word martial having its root in the god of war, Mars, after all. Tap into your own god of war and focus that energy into more civilized channels at River City Warriors.
