Community and Culture – Korean Society of Oregon

By Steve Brian, June 27, 2018

The Korean Society of Oregon is a non-profit community service organization established in 1967. This community center represents and supports more than 35,000 Korean-Americans in Oregon. Its mission is to represent and secure the rights of Korean Americans in Oregon, and to preserve and promote Korean history, cultural heritage, and values. The Korean Society of Oregon is home to a Korean Language school. Students can enroll starting in preschool, and with over 170 current students KSO helps Korean-American youth have a space to learn about Korean heritage and build community. The curriculum covers the Korean language, and other cultural traditions like dancing and crafts.

KSO also provides many fun cultural classes that are open to all members of the community. Classes run on a semester system, and include opportunities like Korean folk dancing, guitar, and knitting. Additionally, in 2017 KSO collaborated with the Korean American Coalition to bring Portland the Korean Food Festival, a weekend of joyful and exciting Korean cuisine.
