Hood River or Bust…or Cully

Kyle and Angelique set out to find a unique home, one where they could get out of the city, and also set up their business. Hood River was calling their names. As designers, they had helped design a couple commercial building spaces in the city, so they had a chance to explore it pretty well. They also have a sailboat, so quick jaunts to the river sounded pretty appealing. Not to mention the idea of having a little more yard than what you typically find in Portland.

After a long search they found a great little house in Hood River that didn’t meet all of their needs, but enough. They went for it, and it didn’t work out. Someone else had gotten to it first. So, they kept looking.

That’s when they came across a unique property in Cully. It was on almost 1/2 an acre and it had an 1800 SF shop, which inadvertently was larger than the house. They started imagining what they could do with all of that space. Setting up their design business from there, and having plenty of other space to do what they wanted. Wanting a big yard and garden, they found they had plenty of room for it. And it was already full of well cared for pear and plum trees, grape vines, asparagus, and marionberries.

What struck me about this place for them was that they found something they didn’t fully know they were looking for, and in Cully, where they hadn’t really been looking. Their lives have been in Portland for many years, and they thought they were ready to venture out. They could have done that very easily. But instead they found a place to grow into, right in the city they already loved. They’re also still having a great time figuring out what to do with all of that shop space.

My friends call me the old house whisperer.  I’ve been working on houses for that last 25 years, before I became a REALTOR®.  I enjoy restoring them, updating them, changing their flow, injecting them with color — bringing them back to life when they have become worn out.  All houses speak to my heart but worn out houses really whisper to me.

A new potential client contacted me on a referral from a dear friend. Steve had already interviewed a couple of great agents before meeting me and was transparent enough to tell me he would likely use one of them. I like transparency, so I immediately liked Steve. He went on to say that since he had promised our joint friend that he would meet with me, making good on that promise – we should have coffee. Suffice to say, that first coffee was the start of our friendship and my commitment to do everything in my power to transform Steve’s tired rental into a profit. (He was swayed pretty easily) I remember much of our first conversation had a lot of “what-if’s” —- ‘Can you really do all the work you say you can do and stay on a tight budget? How do you know the work will really pay off for me? What if I give you money to work on my house and we lose money? Can you really get it all done in less than three weeks? Can you make all the decisions and I stay completely out of it? As in, I wouldn’t even have to come to the project or do ANYTHING and you can work with my tenant whom is living in the home? Can you help me with the move and hire people for me to move of all of the tenants possessions as well?

I said yes to all of Steve’s questions.  Then I went to work on his house, spending three weeks beautifying and making it come to life.  I’m proud of how it turned out. Proud that I did what I said I would do.

Sometimes you just get lucky. Really lucky. This was that kind of lucky you have when you meet someone and you’re just like, “yes,” these are my people. That was what it was like when I met this amazing couple.

Making the move to Portland from New York is a big one, but these two took their time to learn the city and definitely fell in love. So it happened, like we do when we fall in love with someone or someplace, they decided to move in. No more toothbrush at your place kind of scenario… the real deal. It was time to buy a house. We had our list and it was fairly specific. I thought for sure we’d look for a month or so to get a feel for what’s out there so they could see what their options looked like. Then wildfire. They walked in to the first house and that was it, they begrudgingly looked at one more, but there was no reason to waste time – we needed to get an offer in on this house!

We worked our way through a couple of difficult issues but they were unflappable and so calm and kind, it was a dream. I look forward to the housewarming party and am excited for them to start their new adventures as homeowners in the city they fell in love with.
