Good neighbors matter a lot!

When my husband and I moved into our second home 4 1/2 years ago, one of the first neighbors we met were Chris and Terrie.

My neighborhood has many homes where the families have lived there for three or more decades. Our own new home, we are the second owners of a 1962 custom split-level. It has been a nonstop job updating it from a new water main, new paint/fixtures/flooring to a lovely new owner’s bathroom.

Last year, we got a new puppy and we needed to enclose the backyard. The layout of our property was tricky due to a large leaf maple where our property meets Chris and Terrie’s. We wanted our contractor to build a gate on the north side and Chris wanted to make a joint project to which I was very happy. He was using a white picket panel and wire fencing to enclose his big boy, Beau. The white picket panel made it a tad difficult for me to visit on their back patio but thankfully I have long legs LOL!

Our contractor, Brian Newman of Custom Cut Remodeling, took my husband’s idea for a fence/gate and beautifully designed it to end at the maple. Now when I want to visit my neighbors, I just have to open both of our gates! When the weather is better, we’re putting a nice sealer/finish on and maybe some solar lighting on the posts.

If you are looking to buy a home, walk the neighborhood in the evening and weekend; talk to neighbors and make sure that’s where you want to be!

Milwaukie is the New Happening Spot

When I relocated to the Portland area in the summer of 2018, I quickly found Downtown Milwaukie and was hooked. There is such a community feel and so many friendly local businesses.

Here are a few of my favorite Milwaukie hang-outs:

Ledding Library – You know I was one of the cool kids when I start my list with a library, but it’s a REALLY cool library. The new building is not only a beautiful community gathering space but was built to be environmentally friendly by fitting into the surrounding area, energy-efficient, and boasts some serious solar power on the roof. Along with being a great collection of resources and books, there is a great community space, a room specifically for teens, and a magical children’s book section.
You can also borrow more than books at the library of things – like a button maker, sewing machine, leaf blower, games, and more.

Spring Creek Coffee – Great coffee, superb London Fog, and a great gluten-free sandwich. Also, they feature a rotation of local artists on the walls.

Red Snapper – Two words, Danish teak. I’m a big fan of Mid-Century Modern furniture and Michael takes such care and pride in reclaiming, restoring, and selling beautiful furniture, lamps, art, and more. He also has a great eye for design and will come to your home to help you visualize how to best utilize your spaces.

Ovation – Lunch, Brunch, Dinner. Yes please! Truffle Pomme Frités, also yes! Friendly service, great atmosphere, and the cutest outdoor seating area.

Made in Milwaukie – In case I’m not around to evangelize Milwaukie, there is a store dedicated to its awesomeness, which in turn is also awesome. I can often be seen sporting my “Unincorporated Clackamas County” T-shirt from here. Made in Milwaukie is just that, featuring art, clothing, cards, gifts, stickers, and more for local Milwaukie folks.

Enchanté Chocolatier – My favorites are the pecan turtles, mint melt-a-ways, and pretty much everything else. While Enchanté is primarily chocolate, there are some other delicious snacks, and gifts as well. Worth spending some time browsing.

Decibel – A great space, yummy food, and hi-fi music. Whether you are meeting colleagues for an after-work drink, or date night with your sweetie Decibel has a great atmosphere. During the warmer months, their patio is the happening place.

if you travel just a bit south of downtown Milwaukie, you’ll run into Milwaukie Floral, another favorite of mine. Not only a floral shop, but a gift shop and class space with a rotation of classes on crafting, lettering, wreath making, and more.

There are so many great places to visit in Milwaukie. If you haven’t visited in a bit – I’d invite you to come for a visit.

Milwaukie’s Best

Nope.. I didn’t spell it wrong, we’re talking about Milwaukie, Oregon, a suburb of Portland. I’ll save my opinion on the quality of the beer that shares a similar sounding name.

Milwaukie has the feel of a small town, but is just minutes away from all that Portland has to offer. This was exactly what drew my recent clients to this community. It’s really the best of both worlds for them, they found a feeling of quiet and calm without having to commit to actually living in a small town or leaving the city they love.

There are a ton of community events in Milwaukie that are great for residents and visitors alike. The Milwaukie farmers market is an absolute gem! Every Sunday, May through October, you can find a huge variety of local food items including produce, nuts, bread, snacks, wine and spirits. Additionally there is an impressive array of local crafts and often live music. It’s definitely worth checking out! The city also hosts Fun in the Park and Carefree Sunday events that are great for all ages! As the weather cools you might be interested in their Winter Solstice event at Milwaukie Bay Park where you can watch the Christmas Ships go by while you enjoy the bonfire and some tasty treats. If bonfires aren’t your preferred method of getting warm you might consider warming yourself from the inside at the beer garden – I’ve never checked, but my guess is they don’t serve Milwaukee’s Best.
