Piedmont Eye Popper! 😍

Look at this amazing home!! I don’t care who you are – you love this house. It’s got all of the things. Not only is it an awesome Portland Bungalow, but it’s full of Craftsman charm with high ceilings, large windows letting in tons of light, plenty of bedrooms, stylish bathrooms, only the coolest light fixtures… you get where I’m going with this. Oh wait, but that kitchen! Then there’s the rest of the house, the partially finished basement offers tons of flex space and the backyard feels like a private oasis – perfect for an evening hang around the firepit. I highly recommend checking this place out, but be careful.. you might just fall in love.

P.S. Is it just me or does eye popper sound kind of gross? Maybe I’ve been working from home far too long with no “real” human interaction – all of the words start to look so weird. But I digress.

A Little Piece of Happiness

I got a text from my client who was a week or so from closing on her new home that said, “I can’t believe I get to live in that house!” It was a moment of pure joy for me. I was so incredibly grateful for this person making their way to me and that I could be part of this journey to her dream home. Then, after a few more seconds I was even more grateful that I took the time to sit with her excitement and let it be part of my world, after all, I did have a hand in this.

Gratitude is an interesting thing. For most of us it is easy to come up with something that we’re grateful for every day, really, it sounds preposterous to some (it did to me at first), but it’s true. If you think about your day, your interactions, the way something went, there’s generally somewhere to find gratitude. Even in the bad days. Even when things didn’t go your way. It’s there. And the craziest thing is that once you start making a conscious effort to see it, you realize it silently lingers everywhere.

Now don’t get me wrong, I can be a cynical bitch. Sometimes I think I just like it. I accept that part of me so long as I’m not hurting anyone or taking anything away from anyone else. The world is a tough place, sometimes we need to cut ourselves a break.

A couple of years ago I decided to challenge my science brain and open my mind to the ideas of some of my friends who have a higher woo factor. It was a slow transition, not always intentional, but sometimes helpful. The best thing I took from it was a gratitude practice. And guess what? Not woo at all! Totally backed by science.

What are some of the scientifically proven things I love about a gratitude practice you ask? Well… a gratitude practice can increase your overall wellbeing, reduce stress and depression, make you happier, shift you away from toxic emotions, increase empathy, reduce aggression, and on and on… it’s so good! And the best part is that gratitude works even when you’re alone and don’t share it. Perfect for quarantine!

I think we could all use a little piece of happiness these days, maybe it’s time to see what kind of gratitude practice out there might work for you?

A Hallmark Original – Almost

Once upon a time on a beautiful fall Sunday in St. John’s two of my favorite friends were brunching with their folks and wandered into an open house. Little did they know they were about to fall in love. The soaring ceilings, beautiful box beams, large rooms and wood floors lingered in their minds for days… weeks really. Then it happened, there was a price drop. My phone started ringing – this house was now a possibility. Can we do it? Let’s call the lender!

Later that night I got the call, “Hey Shannon… any chance we can buy this house and sell ours?”

“Sure!”

“Also, we’re leaving for Germany in 72 hours, is that a problem?” We laughed and laughed.

But really, “Of course not, we’ve got this.”

And we did! We had their offer accepted a day later (contingent on the sale of their home), got their house on the market in 72 hours, found a buyer and now… finally, they are the proud owners of their dream home!

But it really wasn’t so cut and dry. The events kicked in to motion with the final sale of their house were really just the start. You see, the owners of this dream home – they were also contingent on their new home, and those people.. yep, contingent on their new home too, and those people – you got it. This is where  the holiday miracle story should have been picked up on by the Hallmark Channel. Against all odds all of the REALTORS® were able to work together to ensure nothing went wrong and now there are 5 sets of people who just closed on their new homes just in time for the holidays!

Perfectly Piedmont

This house just feels like home. The main floor has an open living room, 2 br on the main, & dedicated dining room! Tons of charm, A/C, original windows facing the street to preserve character and vinyl windows elsewhere. Full basement w/laundry, 2 sinks, & bonus room for an ideal workshop or studio. Back yard greenhouse and edible landscaping. Easy access to max & I-5, and Peninsula & Farragut Parks. Bike Score 93!

NE Portland’s North End

A first time home buyer’s dream come true

Push past the hubbub of NE Alberta and you will find an array of treasures! Little pockets of town with sweet parks, cozy neighborhoods and homes more in reach when you are getting started. Genevieve found just such a sweet spot to lay down roots in her first home at the north end of Piedmont. A gorgeous 2 bedroom, 1 bath with lots of charisma ~ the perfect fit for a warm-hearted, first time home buyer, also with lots of charisma! It was a treat to be Genevieve’s REALTOR®.

A Gem for Genevieve

Located near Farragut Park, this gem of a home is within easy reach of the Dekum Triangle, the glorious rose gardens of Peninsula Park and the old downtown district in the Kenton neighborhood.

So many great parks!

More bang for the buck

Choosing a home outside of the buzz means not just a quieter location, but also a better value. This super stylish, solid home was a match made in heaven.

A Rose by Any Other Name…

Portland, OR has been known as the City of Roses since 1888. Portland, OR is ideal for growing roses outdoors due to its location within the marine west coast climate region. This region gives us warm, dry summers and rainy but mild winters. Peninsula Park became the city’s first public rose garden in 1909. The garden was designed by Emanuel L Mische, and has over 8,900 plantings featuring 65 rose varieties. The Madame Caroline Testout, the official rose of Portland, was grown at Peninsula Park.

The Madame Caroline Testout

If you’re planning to grow some of these iconic petaled beauties in your yard, here are some tips!

  • Find the Right Location – Rose bushes enjoy receiving 6-8 hours of sunlight daily. They do best when they are protected from the hot afternoon sun, so placing them in a spot with morning light is best.
  • Choose the Right Soil – Roses thrive best in well draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Be sure to mix in compost, peat moss, and other organic matter to improve drainage.
  • Time It Right – The best time to plant roses is either in the spring after the last frost, or in the fall at least 6 weeks before the first frost. Also, plant your roses on a mild weather day – planting on a hot sunny day can stress the plant.
  • Dig Deep – When planting roses dig a deep, wide hole that allows for proper drainage and leaves room for root growth. If planting multiple roses, space them at least 3 feet apart to allow for growth.
  • Out with the Old – Roses do best when you cut off the old growth (some would say it’s a metaphor for life.) To prune, remove all dead and damaged canes (any that look brown.) Then cut back a third to a half of the previous year’s growth until you find healthy, white centers inside the cane. In Portland, it’s best to do a major prune in the early spring, and then lightly prune throughout the year.

Piedmont – A Place of Homes

I just sold a new home in Piedmont. It’s a great neighborhood; historically an original suburb of Portland, but one that is considered very close to downtown today. Not only because of distance, but because of I-5 and light rail running alongside the neighborhood making access so easy. Recently, modern transportation and the popularity of the local Portland Community College led to a revitalization of its business center, but efforts were really driven by the strong community, reinforcing the motivation of the original founders in 1888 who labeled Piedmont “A Place of Homes”.

If you get a chance to visit, check out Piedmont’s green heart- the much-loved Peninsula Park on the southern end. It was Portland’s original Rose garden and had over three hundred thousand visitors in its first year of bloom in 1913! Now it has many amenities, such as a community center, playing fields and courts, picnic and reservable areas, and a great splash pad if you need to beat the heat this summer.

If you are interested in moving to this great neighborhood or need any info on any Portland neighborhood, give me a call at 503-701-1000.

Hello Craftsman

My dear friends, Klaudia and Trevor, scored this beautiful old craftsman in Piedmont. Having spent the past few years completely renovating their previous home they were very clear on what they were looking for when it came time to scale up. We saw a select few, and really lovely, properties over a couple of months but this beauty was the ultimate winner. Check out the detail on the original buffet, it’s swoon worthy. Congratulations you guys!
