Food, Views, and Adventures: Favorite PNW Finds

One of my favorite things

about living in the Pacific Northwest is how there’s always something new to discover—even in places I’ve known for years. Whether you’re local or just visiting, here’s a list of some of my current favorite spots—some old loves, some new gems, and a little something for every mood: food, drink, adventure, and views.

Dinner at Cascada’s Terra Mae restaurant

1. Cascada – NE Portland
This new holistic spa and luxury micro-hotel is an absolute vibe. Think warm wood, thoughtful design, and a sense of calm that hits you the second you walk in. Come for the infrared sauna and curated treatments, stay for the ambiance and leave feeling completely reset.

2. Little Conejo – Downtown Vancouver, WA
Hands down, my favorite taco spot north of the river. Start with the pescado taco—crispy, perfectly seasoned, and topped just right. The carnitas are another must (especially with their house-made tortillas), and their variety of tequilas and mezcals make it easy to linger a little longer.

3. Mt. Tabor – SE Portland
An easy hike with a big payoff. Great for solo morning walks or bringing along little ones. Pro tip: find the bench that sits above Hawthorne Blvd and pause for a quiet moment with a view of the city—it’s magic.

4. Junbi Matcha – SE Portland
Grab a refreshing matcha iced tea (or latte if you’re in the mood for creamy) and head straight to Sellwood Park for a stroll or picnic. A sweet little treat in more ways than one.

5. Korean BBQ at Washington Square Mall – SW Portland
Yes, the wait is often long. But here’s the move—put your name on the list and go shop while you wait. By the time you’re ready to eat, you’ll have worked up the perfect appetite for sizzling meats and all the fixings.

6. G-Love – NW Portland
This spot nails it with elevated small plates, killer cocktails, and truly next-level customer service. It’s the kind of place where they remember your name and your favorite drink. Big yes to the crispy cauliflower and anything from the bar.

7. Loop de Loop Winery – White Salmon, WA
An absolute hidden gem tucked into the Columbia Gorge. The wine is phenomenal, the vibe is relaxed, and the views? Pure magic. It’s my go-to for a peaceful weekend drive and a little tasting adventure.

8. Husubis – Vancouver, WA
Open Friday to Monday and always until they sell out (which happens fast!). Show up early, bring your patience, and prepare to be wowed. This little spot is making big waves with flavor-packed bites that are 100% worth the wait.

9. DOSALAS – Vancouver, WA
Head straight to the upstairs patio and order a Coco Chanel cocktail and the bone-in tomahawk ribeye. You’ll be living your best life with views over the Columbia River and flavors that hit in all the right ways.

10. Cape Horn Trail – Columbia River Gorge, WA
If you love a challenging hike with epic views, this is it. Sweeping panoramas from the cliffs above the river, wildflowers in the spring, and enough switchbacks to get your heart rate up—Cape Horn is one of my all-time favorite hikes in the PNW.

Where to get your (plant-based) munch on, broken down by quadrant: Part #2

We’re so excited to continue the Rose City tour with highlights from the Southeast – which is home to some of our top picks in all of Portland!
Known popularly for its cool & trendy vibe, you could certainly wander through the neighborhoods and discover any number of hip gastropubs and vegan delights. But if you want to live and eat like a local, read on for our personal recommendations and a couple of hidden gems!
We would be remiss if we did not give a special shoutout to Belmont Street. A lot may have changed since our Beloved Belmont post in 2019, but only for the better as it has become a veritable oasis of plant based culinary treasures!

Lilla

The only place to go when you are craving ethical Italian!
Where are they? 960 SE Madison Street
What do they offer?  The first fully vegan Italian restaurant since Portobello closed in 2016, Lilla is the creation of Indian-American chef Sanjay Chandrasekaran. Popularly known for his restaurant The Sudra (see Part 1 of the tour!), Chef Chandrasekaran prepares mouth-watering vegan temptations.
What do they value? Lilla is located in the spot where vegan Middle Eastern restaurant Tiny Aviv once sat. When Tiny Aviv closed, Chandrasekaran decided to continue the lease with a new concept, and Lilla was born! You can find the best Italian-style comfort foods, all while enjoying the fact that they are plant based and cruelty-free!

Mirisata

Vegan Sri Lankan dishes of EPIC proportion!
Where are they? 2420 SE Belmont Street
What do they offer? Fully plant-based menu (plus brunch!) in casual atmosphere with counter service.
What do they value? Mirisata is proud to be worker-owned. They do not have a traditional “head chef” but instead collaborate on every dish to make original creations! Loosely translated from Sinhala, the name means “spicy curry” – and while not everything on their menu is spicy, you can be sure each item will be packed with flavor!
Our favs? First of all, prepare yourself for HUGE portion sizes! Our lunch there lasted all week, and Kendall took some to her non-vegan parents – they loved it! You have to try the Dolphin-style Kottu and Polos Cutlets.

Meatless takes on Japanese comfort food
Where are they? 720 SE Grand Ave
What do they offer? Feel-good Japanese homestyle favorites that hit the spot!
What do they value? Obon owners Humiko Hozumi and Jason Duffany started their vegan concept by selling in farmers markets, then to the Morrison Market food hall, and finally to their brick and mortar location! Homestyle food is very important to them, with lots of house-made fermented foods and broths inspired by Hozumi’s family recipes.
Our favs? Hands-down, the Kakiage and the Kenchinjiru! They even have FREE dog sushi!

Cultured Kindness

Vegan Cheese Shop
Where are they? 1217 SE Stark Street
What do they offer? Small-batch, ethically-sourced vegan cashew cheeses.
What do they value? From their website: Cultured Kindness conducts business as a socially responsible member of its community. Their mission is to spread ethical veganism by removing the obstacles that prevent people from choosing a vegan lifestyle. They believe that veganism is better for the planet, for individual health, and most certainly for the animals who suffer in the dairy industry.
Our favs? Cultured Kindness recently catered a Broker’s Open for us. We love the Mushroom Melt, as well as their cheese and cracker boards!

Succulent seasonal Thai and pan-Asian fare!
Where are they? 3801 SE Belmont Street
What do they offer? 100% plant based pan-Asian food and inspired cocktails, with a menu that rotates seasonally. Nan and Prae are from southern Thailand, and draw inspiration from the region. (Norah’s sister restaurant is vegan-friendly Mestizo!)
What do they value? Norah is woman-owned. “The name Norah refers to a traditional dance reserved for celebrations and community gatherings in Southern Thailand where Nan and Prae grew up. The dance is a symbol of community vitality. We hope to bring that same energy of togetherness to the food we serve.”
Our fav? The Cauliflower Curry is INCREDIBLE! (roasted cauliflower, house curry & pickles, jasmine rice)

Hannah and Sasha are just plain awesome and therefore it makes sense that we got them into a truly awesome house. They gave me fair warning at the onset that they weren’t in a hurry and anticipated being very patient in their efforts to find the one. Moving On Up to Mt. Tabor

A little over 4 years ago a most fabulous lady named Claire contacted me to help her purchase her first home. At the time, she was working for a non-profit and while she didn’t have a lot of funds or a high paying job, she did have fierce determination to buy a home. It took a while, and included several grants and first time home buyer programs, but she wound up purchasing the most adorable condo ever that I was listing. My seller on the condo had purchased the condo a couple of years before, and then met the love of her life and they sold the condo to buy a bigger home. Claire wound up buying the condo after a break-up with a former partner. Fast forward 3 years and Claire contacted me again because she had met the love of her life Timothy. Claire had moved out of the condo into a larger apartment with Timothy, and she was ready to sell the condo. I listed the condo and within a couple of weeks got a great offer and a month later she closed on the condo and that chapter of her life. Timothy is a veteran and eligible for a VA loan. I hooked them up with Jennifer Leon over at Umpqua who is fabulous with VA loans and they got pre-approved for a nice sized loan. Off we went to go look at good sized detached houses with 3 and 4 bedrooms in great parts of town.

We spent a solid weekend looking at 10+ houses, and as often happens, they fell in love with the first house we saw. It’s a brand new 4 bedroom home with a legal ADU that sits on the edge of Mt Tabor and has a lovely west facing view. With both of them working from home, this house has plenty of space for a home office and future bedrooms for their hopefully expanded family. And with the ADU on the bottom floor, it provides a great space for a renter or as a space for family to come stay for longer visits once a baby comes on board. After they decided that this was the house they wanted to buy, they got back in touch with Jennifer for a pre-approval letter to go along with their offer, and found at that the interest rate was only 2.5%. TWO POINT FIVE PERCENT! Whut?!?  Claire and Timothy had a monthly budget and at that low of a rate, it meant that they could do 100% financing and still pay several hundred less a month then what they had budgeted for. We all had to slap ourselves silly when we found out how low their monthly payments would be- even with zero down.

We wrote up the offer, had it accepted, went through inspections and with the exception of a very unexpected find of an abandoned oil tank on a property with new construction, (that thankfully had not leaked) sailed through the transaction. A little more then 3 years after I handed Claire her first set of keys to her very first home, I had the privilege of handing over the second set of keys to an even bigger and better home.

Adventures in Real Estating: Selling During Covid

This dreamy South Tabor farmhouse of infinite possibilities just sold in the midst of covid panic at $52k over asking with 7 offers in just 3 days.  Many congratulations to my client — all his hard work getting this gem ready for market paid off big time!

Before covid began, we met to discuss how he could best prep his home for the market.  I always recommend scheduling a consult and walk through with your REALTOR® before embarking on home projects. This can save you lots of time and money, as we are able to identify which changes will have the greatest impact on your sale in the current market. In this case, most of the work was focused on the exterior, but inside, fresh white paint and top notch staging brought the house to life in a whole new way!

It was as if the whole house sprang to life! I remember walking through after it was painted and could practically feel the walls beaming and calling out for the next stewards of home.

One of the aspects I love most about this home is the SPACE! All kinds of spaces for all kinds of imaginable fun. Outside there is not only a nice sized grassy backyard + side yard perfect for garden beds, but also a hot-tub cabana, big locking bike shed and a carport with storage and workbench. Inside, the 3 bedroom/2 bath home also includes a den and office upstairs while the basement offers a finished bonus room, laundry area and unfinished space for storage or projects. Covid protocol for all potential buyers meant current preapproval letters, masks, shoe covers and hand washing at the beginning and ending of each showing. No more than 3 people in the house at a time and 30 minute showings with 15 minute buffers. When the listing went live we had  immediate interest and within 48 hours over 40 showings were scheduled.  Three days later, my seller went pending with a solid offer that beat out 6 others at $52,000 over asking and stellar terms.

Throughout this transaction, both my seller and the agent on the other side were excellent communicators, easy to work with, and at the end of the day everyone wrapped up feeling really happy about the outcome. I am deeply grateful to my client for his ease in trusting my expertise and putting in the time and energy to give his house the best possible outcome in our market.

Sometimes you have to get out of the box and make a leap to meet your goals. It’s no secret that buying and selling a home at the same time can be complicated. Without the funds to make a purchase while still owning and living in your current home, it gets even more tricky. Add to that a couple of kids who walk to school, an adorable pup named Tacey, and two parents who need to take care of them all and it takes it to another level. Finding the right house is one step, putting it all together is something different. When John and Katia found their perfect family “Upgrade Home”, they still owned “Little Red” their first and current house.  We crunched numbers, and buying without having Little Red sold, wasn’t a viable option. So, we got creative. The seller of Upgrade had already moved and his house was sitting empty. We put a strategy together where John, Katia, their kids and pup, could move into Upgrade prior to closing, paying rent until Little Red sold. We sold the idea passionately, and the seller went for it! How could he not? They are truly one of the most adorable families on the planet. They moved into Upgrade, and we got Little Red all dolled up as fast as we could. It was sale pending within 5 days of hitting the market. Now everything is going to close, and since they already got the keys to their new home, they will just be doing a high-five on closing day. What a day it will be! Mt. Tabor Dog Park Review

Mt. Tabor is one of the best-known parks in all of Portland. Hundreds of people visit each day for hiking along the numerous trails of this extinct volcano. Views from the top are legendary because of the 360-degree panorama that makes it possible to see downtown, Mt. Rainer to the North, and Mt. Hood to the East. While the main park allows on-leash dogs, at the most southern end of the park, below Lincoln/Harrison Roads, there is an off-leash dog area that can be accessed from the streets that go through Warner Pacific University.

 

The dog park, like the rest of Tabor, is filled with massive trees that provide plenty of shade even on Portland’s sunniest days. The off-leash area makes for a great launching point to explore the rest of Mt. Tabor Park, but be prepared for a climb! The dog area marks the beginning of the mountain, meaning that your pup will get plenty tired as they sprint up and down the steep incline. While most dogs will love the terrain (and owners will love how tired it makes them), you may want to think twice before bringing older dogs or young puppies. Running full speed down a mountain can put a lot of strain on a dog’s joints and a few wipeouts are entirely possible.

 

All of Mt. Tabor is gorgeous and worthy of exploration, but for those with furry friends, the southern section should be the first stop.
